New Craft Beer for North Wharf

The craft beer revolution gathers pace as 16 TUN opens to Auckland’s ale enthusiasts.

There are more than 30 independent brewers in New Zealand – but bars specialising in craft beer are few and far between.

Soon Auckland beer connoisseurs will have a new spot where they can enjoy the very best local craft brews, carefully selected by craft beer aficionados Andrew Ranum and Matthew Kelly.

Set in the city’s popular waterfront precinct, 16 TUN opens in Wynyard Quarter’s North Wharf on Monday 25 August, catering to the demand for independently produced, quality craft ales.

The latest work of diversified hospitality industry operator Showcase Hospitality*, 16 TUN is craft through and through – from its timber, steel and mechanical infrastructure to the 52 craft beers and seven ciders that grace its fridges.

Bar manager Andrew Ranum is bringing his 20-plus years’ hospitality experience to the role.

“We’re pouring 10 specially selected beers through the taps, plus we’ll have an extensive bottle offering – including eight different styles from Stout and Porter through to IPAs and Pilsners.

“The focus is full-on craft and because we are a Free House we are not associated with any brewery which means we can hand select the best craft beers in New Zealand.

“With an ever increasing number of independent breweries in New Zealand we have plenty of selection, so we will ensure people can challenge their taste buds.”

Eight of the 10 craft tap brews will be available for between three and six months depending on demand and two taps will rotate every few weeks.

16TUN has a full service kitchen serving New Zealand food perfectly matched by head chef James Balakrishnan to the beer being served.

There are ‘half tun’ options for those with a less robust appetite with the ‘full tun’ comprising something more substantial. In the half tun category look for Kiwi treats such as Ruakaka paua fritters, Alpine Origin Merino lamb, Kumara fries and a range of sliders including pork, fish and beef.

Burgers, ribs, fish and chips and several vegetarian-friendly dishes are among other items on the full tun menu.

The interior fit-out by Brand Agency String Theory elicits visions of pioneering New Zealand with a focus on copper fittings and timber walls. Seating booths feature steel and wood with soft furnishings, and exposed light fittings control the ambient mood.

Ranum says 16 TUN promises to deliver superior service in a stylish environment.

“We believe we have a premium craft offering with something to suit all tastes.”

 

Note: A Tun refers to the vessel used in the early part of the brewing process as well as being a historical term for a large beer cask and a measure of capacity. Sixteen tons is also the name of a song about the life of a coal miner and was first recorded in 1946 by Merle Travis. The song has been recorded by such luminaries as Tennessee Ford, Johnny Cash, Bo Diddley, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones and more.
